Read the Scripture text found
in Genesis 1:1-2:3. Read aloud with your children, take turns, or have them
read passages alone during quiet time.
Background
Genesis is one of the oldest
and perhaps most significant books ever written. There would be no
established groundwork for the rest of the Bible to build on without this
book. Genesis states irrefutably the origin of the universe. Throughout this
book of the Bible, we learn about Gods attributes, character, and the ways
that He moves in the lives of men and nations! God, being a divine and
eternal Being, has created the universe (everything).
Close your eyes for a moment
and imagine, if you can! Nothing! There is nothing but an endless, empty,
void with no sound, color, or movement. Then, boom, God creates matter and
energy (Genesis 1:1). “In the beginning God created the heaven and the
earth.” The translation for the word “heaven” in this context is “upper
reaches of the atmosphere or space.” The reference to the word “earth,” is a
basic element of matter.
For a more in-depth study, you
may want to look into the book The Genesis Record, by Henry M. Morris. This
book is a scientific and devotional commentary of the book of Genesis.
